I was a precocious bucked-toothed, freckled redhead with an unfortunate bowl cut. It turns out that this was not exactly the recipe for a popular or enjoyable adolescence. As can be the case with middle schoolers, many of my classmates were not always very nice. In fact, they could be relentless in their teasing. The social hierarchy required someone be on the bottom, and I’m sad to say that I had drawn that straw. Then one day while being teased on the playground something shifted in my twelve-year-old self. A realization washed over me like a powerful force – that realization was that I had the ability to change my life. I still remember the feeling of expansion and freedom as if it were yesterday. Today, I would call the root of my epiphany “agency,” but at the time, all I knew was that everything I needed to make the most radical changes in my life was within me.
